Looking at the Stars From Angles Old and New
There is something very simple, almost elemental, at stake as I sit in a wooden cart, and the machinery begins to grind. I am slowly lifted up a ramp until I reach the center of a hollow, darkened 15-foot sphere. When the noise from the gears below stops, another rumbling begins that is difficult to place. I am stationary but feel as if I am rotating, levitating in strange directions. When I look up at the 692 pinpoints of light in the metallic ceiling, I see they are revolving in a painted nighttime sky, lines joining them in simple constellations.
